Thrift Find: Mid-Century Eames Era Armchair
Must be the week for donating mid-century chairs. Not more than two days after finding a Barcelona-style chair at our local Goodwill (I shared it here last Monday), this one turned up at Habitat Re-Store.
Once again, I didn’t buy it right away. Having JUST bought a chair a few days before, I walked right by with great will-power. Well, not right by. I first turned it over to look for a label (none found).
Two days later when my husband went in, it was still there and he brought it home for just $20. Neither is it a real deal Eames chair, nor is it in perfect shape but still a good find. It’s rare to find mid-century items in the rural mountains of North Carolina but because fewer people are into the style I seem to have less competition.
It has a significant scratch on the plycraft back, wear around the wood edges, an oddly made button or two, and is upholstered in vinyl (rather than leather which was originally intended for this chair style). One tip when you are looking at a vintage chair in this style: sit in it and make sure the mechanics of it work fine. Many don’t which causes them to lean back way too far and would be an expensive repair. Thankfully, this one is in great shape!
[Update: I later upholstered this vintage lounge chair and ottoman and showed step-by-step instructions here.]
