Meet Merrow Overlock! My newest production assistant. Though he’s an old boy, Merrow comes to my sewing workroom with good references and lots of experience! Or so it seems by his sturdy yet well-used appearance.

Merrow Industrial Overlock

Merrow machines have been around forever and are real champs. I’m no expert. Google told me. ;) The nice customer service rep at theĀ company headquarters gave us a bit of information about this particular machine as well. By looking up the serial number, we learned that it was custom made in the early 70’s and made for a specific stitch and fabric. What that stitch and fabric is exactly is yet to be determined. All I know is that it has four threads and a cutter which hints at an overlock stitch of some sort. The rep mentioned maybe an edge stitch. Or even a badge making stitch….no, please, no. I don’t make badges. My dream would be that it could edge a sweater knit nicely. Maybe to edge and sew the inner seams of hats in a nicer way then my cheap little plastic serger. That would be great.

In any case, I plopped down a Ben Franklin and hoped for the best. He’s been sitting in my workroom for a week. Threading him seems daunting but I’ll work up the nerve soon and let you know how he works out!

Him and his sassy little blue lamp. Even if Merrow padded his resume and gets shown the curb, that little blue number is staying!

As an aside, I’ve created a new “finds” section to the blog. This section will feature old items that have been given new life. Click the “Finds” button above to see the whole category.

Warmly,
